I’m thinking that Nate, as an 11 year-old on a limited budget, can’t afford to buy an undamaged copy of the book along with the torn copy he’s already being forced to buy.

But, this is Nate we’re talking about. He’s 11 as Lincoln pointed out so he doesn’t think about consequences or think things through. I suppose that is why we keep reading this. We want to see what predicaments he gets himself into. In a way, it reminds me of “I Love Lucy”.
