Boy, have I ever been there, done that! I recall sparks and smoke shooting out of my exhaust one time, driving my trade-in car to the dealership. (Still got my money for it though!)
Never had the smoke, but had the strange sound coming from the mid back rear. Try explaining that to your dad when you’re 17 and know nothing about cars. Turned out it was the drive shaft, just waiting for a too speedy sharp turn before letting loose. Fortunately, I nagged about the annoying noise. Dad was glad I did.
