    For heavy mortars, it takes at least two to aim the mortar, leaving aside the spotter. They have sights like surveyors’ tools, and one guy needs to keep his eye in the eyepiece while the other adjusts the legs. Of course, you also need at least two people to carry a heavy mortar, so it’s just as well. (The spotter can’t help carry, because he’s in a different place; you don’t want the firing team to actually have the target in sight, because then they’re in sight of the target.)

    There’s also a lot of math involved, which is another reason Junior might not want to pursue mortarman as a career path.

    Its amazing how much math we use in ‘real’ life. Without calculators we figure out how much gas is left in the tank and how much we need to buy to get us home (or to the bank!), the total amount on a bill, including tax and if eating out, the tip. If you golf, which club and how much force is needed to get that teeny, tiny ball into the hole.I like how Bud is bonding with Junior and getting to the point.
