"Doctoral Thesis"
"Applicant: Dan
The ideal human body temperature and its ling-term effects on health, productivity and social interaction.
98.6% excellent work!"
It was Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit and he set his scale to zero at the coldest temperature he could reach in his laboratory with ice, brine and ammonium chloride, to 32 at ice without the ammonium chloride, and to ninety-six at his body temperature at the time. There are only three countries in the world that use Fahrenheit as the official temperature scale: the United States, the Cayman Islands and Belize
The reason it’s 98.6 instead of 96 is because of later tweaks to the scale. THere are 180 degrees between freezing and boiling, and 180 has more divisors than 100, which is the only reason Fahrenheit stayed around so long.Funny thing, though – I always thought doctoral theses were graded on a more or less pass-fail rather than a percentage basis.

When it’s 32 outside, that’s a lot warmer sounding than when it’s Zero.
