I just don’t get the whole “mean mother-in-law” thing. Why is she so upset with the man who puts a roof over her daughter’s and grandkids’ heads; food on their table and clothes on their backs? He works hard. Doesn’t cheat. Doesn’t drink or do drugs. Doesn’t beat his wife or children. Is a good role model for the kids. Her daughter is happy with him so why isn’t she? Is she jealous because her husband didn’t measure up meaning her daughter made a better choice than she did?
She’s there because like sand in the oyster, Herb needs a little irritation to smooth out his life into pearl-like days to string on the necklace of life…

This strip brought to mind the phrase: “When I am old, I will wear purple”.

Another question might be why does Eula live with Herb and his wife? She is healthy enough to cook and drive so she could live alone.
