Coming Soon š At the beginning of April, youāll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
It is late at night, and I have never heard of ātagback,ā although I get the context of dropping a coin (cheapskate!) in the collection basket. What has me completely bamfoozled, however, is that Burl is (1) giving anything at all and (2) itās a bill.Good morning to all my friends in Crustwood.Susan, Iām sure youāll know about this.
Good morning, Crustwoodians. I donāt understand ātagbackā, I just know it has something to do with Burl being even more of a horrid cheapskate than I thought. :sigh*:* It shouldnāt surprise me, though.
Nice to see you backā¦. umā¦. āPat McGroināā¦.
ā¦..And noā¦. well, not till afterā¦ erā¦. at least dinner and a movie.
Mikie, you have such faith!I was going to say the same as you about Burl putting in folding green.
Could it be play money?
But as for tagbacks, the only one I remember doesnāt seem to fit this situation.
So I Googled it ā and itās the only use I found online.
It was from playing Tag. When I was a kid, we argued over the ārightā way to play.
In my Ohio neighborhood, āItā was āItā till everyone was found, or till he or she gave up and yelled āAll-ee All-ee IN Free!ā
The last person tagged or reaching āhomeā became It.
But my cousins, and they were in Illinois, like Burl, played that āItā tagged someone, and then quickly ran āhomeā and was safe, while the tagged person immediately became āItā.
A bratty cousin could easily re-tag a slow runner (like meā¦.sniffle) and run Home firstā¦. UNLESS āItā shouted āTag!! No tag-backs!ā
Or you could play the whole game āno Tag-backsā from the beginning.
Soā¦ after all thatā¦. what does it have to do with the collection plate?
Is that Burlās way of saying you canāt put in money and take it right out again?
Meanwhile, I had to magnify the comic more than the image allows to find that bell.
Andā¦.meanwhileā¦..Dry, your new avatar is adorableā¦.
And GymShoe ā hope youāre OK. Havenāt seen you for days.
I couldnāt even find it in Urban Dictionary. Susan, I also recall that in the game of tag, we couldnāt tag back the person who tagged usā¦too easy. I have a feeling itās when a guy dips his money in the plate then surreptitiously pulls it back out, or part of it. The highlights (what are they actually called) around his hand with the money in it suggest that. Itās not stealing from the plate, just hypocrisy.
agree that Burl might be suspect of just pretending to drop that bill. @ Susan, I did not see Dryās avatar or comment. @ Pat, I use elegant stemware in a color to coordinate with my outfit (yesterday =blue) and I make the ice only with purified water so it adds no taste. Whether his pretense is called a ātagbackā I have no idea. @Ray, why should Susan write a note?
sue-sunshine.. good post.. took me back.. N-side Chicago.. thatās the way we played itā¦ we too were a bit baffled by the tagback thing, reason for checking commentsā¦ tagback=takeback makes senseā¦
Burl is either going to going to do 2 religious things with that greenback:1. The āPalm Sundayā moveā¦which is dropping the bill in whilst removing oneā¦orā¦2. The āPassoverā move which is seemingly dropping the bill in while moving the basketā¦a misdirection move..Or heāll simply drop the bill in and pull out 3 quarters (the NFL move).
@ Ray, it WAS Susan who wrote about the size, but I doubt that Julie wants to explain a single cartoon; Since they are not playing tag, and Burlās cheapness is legendary, perhaps he wants to be the only one to takeback a faux donation, so the tray is still relatively full.
@Pat. the only time I might do that is a hot night in the pool and it doesnāt matter what color. When the pool light needed replacement I found a fairly inexpensive one with color cycling- lovely for swimming laps ;-)
Though a lifelong Illinoiance, I am as baffled as the rest about the ātagbackā here. And although Julie should not have to explain her work, Iād sure appreciate her input here.
Many times, words or phrases can have many meanings. I just watched last nightās āWatch What Happensā on Bravo and the poll question was āwith which of the R candidates would you BUST it?ā I imagine something sexual is indicated (so none as there is only one man for me), but a dinner conversation or a dance is possible. And Pat, here in Phoenix HOT only means well over 100 F in daily temperature ;-)

I have no idea what ātag backā means in this situation either, but I think I agree with purple skyās assessment.

Here is the real scary partā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..Burl knows what it means and we donāt!!

I think it might be a miss-spelling of āno TAKEbacksā. Looks like heās taking OUT instead of putting IN.

I think it is when you make change like put in a 5 and take a couple of 1ās back

just noticed that GoComics has apparently wiped out the entire Dinette Set archive prior to mid-May 2011. WTF?!
margueritem about 13 years ago
I the light of day, I see that the man Burl is addressing appears to be taking a coin out of the plate, āmaking changeā, as it were.

Not sure what tagback means, but Iām not so sure the bill in Burlās hand might not be Monopoly money.
