I tried to tell you. If you don’t use the closing HTML tags there would be consequences.

HTML Closing TagsYou type: <h5>Happy Holidays!</h5>We see:

Happy Holidays!Note the / (slash) in the closing tag. If don’t use the proper closing tag you comment is corrupted and the Delete & Reply buttons do not appear. You can also add emphasis by use big and bold tags. You type: <h5><b><big><i>Happy</i> Holidays!</big></b></h5>

    We see:

    Happy Holidays!

Note the closing tag for each attribute.

The debris cloud is nowhere near as dangerous as the Frog Applause fallout.

x_tech: Thanks for the ongoing style guide updates. One of these years I’ll get them all re-updated at the website. I also appreciate Teresa’s gathering them up over at her blog.

You can get HTML to appear as itself without being interpreted by using the “code” tagset. Anything between <code> and </code> will not be processed.

Another way is to use the HTML tokens, as I did above, typing & lt ; and & gt ; (without the spaces) will give you the angle brackets without forcing an interpretation of HTML code.

x_Tech, the delete and reply buttons not appearing depends on your browser. I normally use Opera and they don’t appear for me but in conversing about this before, I learned that for others, they do appear and did some browser experimenting to figure it out.on the popular pet names from the blog, I’m surprised Maggie was only number 5 for female dogs. I know more people with a female dog named maggie than I know people with any dog with some other name. And yay, none of our 5 cats have a name that’s on any of the lists. We have males Mozart, Pip and Fezziwig and females Mercedes and Amy. Amy was a stray or abandoned cat we took in (we live out in the country and see a lot of that, sadly). The other 4 are a lesson in not going to see new kittens starting when they’re 2 weeks old to see which one you want to adopt. And yes, Dickens is a great source for pet names.

I know this is the kind of audience that will see the same thing I see coming out of the spaceship in today’s “Brevity”.

“Boob’? does that mean many people in AZ can’t tell the difference between a rolicking field of mammaries and a sand-storm? their elbows from unseen parts of anatomy? good fine work-ethic-driven people and criminal legislators?

Oh…and I’m slow, too. Should I be looking for another outlet to read the comics from?Something crashing out there? shouldn’t the debris all be in two dimensions…?

Seriously, I appreciate gocomics. They’re not perfect, but overall I give them high marks for presentation and availability, and again, I appreciate the comics art, always have, and these are the great American novels being written over time, they actually enter into and take part in our national conversation, four panels a day. Genius!

Movies, tv, doesn’t have that quick short input and turn-around, easy assimilation, ability to make quick changes and comment on current events, etc. Maybe the Daily Show, and SatNiteLIve tries, but for connection with a significant demographic, comics is IT, baby. Select and powerful, also real art, a rarity. So thanks for making the strips available, gocomics, and thanks to you Teresa, you’re fun…and this is not a pipe…Leslie

re: the dog/cat names. I noticed most, if not all, can also be “people” names. I’ve tried to avoid that since I don’t want to face the fact that my dog’s name might be the same as a new friend’s kid. My past cats were Velvet, Tiger and Fluffy. Dogs were Speckles, Mischief (called Missy though), Muffin and Saucy. Current pup is Moxie. Sadly, I can imagine someone naming a kid Muffin or Moxie, but I hope they’d be few and far between.

@LaflnLarry: Intriguing. Obviously GoComics was not really planning on users getting so creative with their comments. Under the old Markdown system, placing a back-tick in column 1 would break the entire page – fortunately that little glitch has since been fixed with the deprecation of Markdown.

    Blog: 1960’s

“Special Forms, the Lady Tells Him”

(To be chanted to the cadence of “Hiawatha”)

For anyone who has ever submitted a deck at an input-output window…

By the Input/Output windowOf an IBM computer, sits and old man bearded warrior.Silent. Waiting for his program.

As a young man he submitted90 cards a FORTRAN program.Walked away believing he wouldIn 2 hours receive his output.

Through the snow and wind returning,Through the door; up to the window.Calmly, with a pleasant smile, heAsks the lady for his output.

“Turnaround,” she tells him boldly,“Turnaround is now 6 hours.”With her hand she indicates theBlackboard on the wall behind her.

With a shrug he quits the windowTurns around and climbs the stairwell.Sits and studies for 6 hours. Then returns presents his check stub.

“Special forms,” the lady tells him.“Special forms have now been mounted.”Even planets in their orbitsHalt when special forms are running.

“But,” he questions, “I was promisedI’d receive my print out, if I’dWait 6 hours for its running.”“Special forms,” the lady tells him.

Once again he shrugs his shoulders.Buys himself a Dr. Pepper.Buys a couple frozen Twinkies™.Waits until the moon has risen.

Education comes not onlyIn the classroom; from a teacher.Mephistopheles grins as theytell him that his deck is missing.

Now an odd expression slowlySpreads across his former calm face.He sits down next to the window.Sets his jaw. His eyes become glazed.

By the Input/Output windowOf an IBM computer, sits and old man bearded warrior.Silent. Waiting for his program.

Plenty of FB, fortunately, but no FA yesterday and so far none today…. Is Teresa taking some time semi-off? Is GoComics broken again? Is this retaliation for the strip that attracted the attention of the GoComics Blogger? What’s the story of the non-story here? —Sisyphos himself said it, 28 XII 11, 1:18 AM.
