Enlarged, painted 1853 (as @Baslim the beggar pointed out, 1651 is part of the title, which is perhaps news to Mr. Melcher, or maybe he doesn’t really care about such details — doesn’t want to take the time to research the date he ascribes to the artwork, not that he had to devote any time at all to drawing anything). Since Wikipedia is down today, here’s an alternate biography of the artist, along with many of his works.
Having read the short stories Anne Frank wrote while in hiding and realised the great potential that was lost, I agree with most posters today. Out of line.If you want to see the only known existing footage of Anne Frank before her family went into hiding, you can find it on You Tube or on Indian Food Rocks (which is where I found it, while looking for a recipe). Apparently there was a wedding in the building next to theirs and someone was filming the bride’s departure from home with an old cinecamera. You can see Anne off to one side with her bike and then upstairs on her balcony. I think that’s her mom and sister at the other window of their home.I found it moving.
have they found out the dirtbag that sold the family out to the nazis? was the dirtbag killed for being a collaborator, or did they flee to south america?
You think this one is bad/// Next week they are doing a rewrite of a Tim Rice/ Frank Lloyd Webber play. It is going to be a dinner theater production called “Jesus Christ Supperstar”.
Mentioning someone who’s Jewish doesn’t make something Anti-Semitic.
You’d have to point out that he was making fun of her Jewishness. That’s not happening here, but this is a perfect example of being who don’t understand the concept throwing the word around like it applies. It does not.
It may be inappropriate, but there’s s absolutely NOTHING anti-Semitic about it.
Poor selection today? Perhaps. Knowing that there are those that are conversant on the subject……good. Realizing that there are some who will dig a little further into the subject matter….refreshing.
1651 marked the end of the English Civil War, hence the Proscribed Royalist could come out of hiding, alive (something Anne Frank wasn’t given the chance to experience). That’s why the date’s part of the title. And, yes, the Enlarged link, in my first comment, just has The Royalist for the title; I was already aware of that.
My first impression EXACTLY master… well put… but as Dog experienced the other day… we all have a right to express our own thoughts and feelings here… and if they are different than others, thats what makes our country so great…. it’s only when those that have serious issues with the topic and denigrate those with differing opinions, do I have a problem with…
Mr. Melcher has kicked a hornets’ nest, but we all owe him for the strip, so let’s overlook a gaffe now & then. 99.9% of his output is just fine! Ironically, this painting depicts a result of…(wow!)religious bigotry – the very source of the death of the Franks, almost 300 years later. In this case, an English Catholic is in hiding, but it had gone the other way in Bloody Mary’s reign. Millais, mid-19th Cent., was enjoying the enlightenment of the Victorian Age…and preaching it as well. The real message is that romantic love transcends religious affiliation. Now, if I can just think of a funny caption…..
i think one of the best uses of the coment option on this site is to come up with your own caption. if you don’t like the Ann Frank reference, come up with one of your own that’s better. i love seeing everyone’s funny.
I agree that the title is not so offensive as the actual painting depicted another example of religious persicution. I enjoy this strip and will not be easily offended.Good to see Dogsniff for the first time since hearing he was back.I was busy baking today and took a little time before dusk to catch some sun while reading.

I wonder how many of the people who say they are offended, really are. I am a Royalist and find no offence in the subject matter of the painting.
My mother had a saying: those who want to be offended will find offence everywhere.
