Rip Haywire by Dan Thompson for January 21, 2012
Transcript:
Wolfe: Now that you can't walk, I guess you'll have to give up trying to get Axe Jefferson, eh? Rip: Like Hades it does! Wolfe: Now just how the heck are you going to track him on one good leg? Why does no one understand when my questions are rhetorical?

@nighthawks:Well, not in polite company; you know, in front of ladies, children and convicted felons. (I prefer the literate “aitch e double toothpicks” myself.) But as to why Rip doesn’t use it, I assume it’s a facet of his character used by Mr. Thompson to show just how wholesome Rip is. Also there are some in the reading audience who would take offence at the hero using course language, even if it isn’t technically swearing. Therefore Rip employs unusual and entertaining work-arounds to avoid uttering such naughty expletives. Or so I guess.

Haywire Friendship Tip #2:Don’t ask Rip a question that you know you won’t like the answer to.

“Hades” is more fun to say than “Hell,” anyway! :-)

I’m reminded of what Rick Blaine said to Louis Renault at the end of Casablanca, “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
