I once met a young man in Ann Arbor who had talons for fingernails — but only on his right hand. Thought he was gonna slice my hand off at the wrist when we were introduced and he shook my hand. But he explained that Segovia had taught a master class the previous semester and had said that the only way to play classical guitar was with your fingernails. So this guy’s nails were almost literally nine-inch nails. They extended out from his fingertips a few inches, curled upwards for about another inch or so, and turned out again for another couple of inches. I’ve played guitar for 40 years now; I don’t think I could ever make nails like that work. For one thing, mine would break before they got that long.
