The most devoted “defenders of the oppressed” have typically been wealthy college students. It’s depicted that way in Les Misérables. A review of the 9/11 crew, the Bali bombers, the attempted London terrorists — they all involved students from wealthy families who saw themselves as heroes out to avenge/defend the oppressed.
