Can someone please explain the origination of the fear of clowns to me?

I’m pretty sure clowns were scary before “It”…especially since there was some serial killer BEFORE the book came out who used to dress up as a clown…I don’t remember ever being scared of them, but I can see how they’d be freaky to kids (they act sporadically and sometimes slightly malevolent, they’re paler than Edward with giant, exaggerated features, they usually have that permanent smile which is too big and seems suspicious…)

Who ever heard of a cute and cuddly clown? Kids want things that are cute, cuddly and fuzzy.

Clowns mimic the people in power over us, which is very funny, and very tragic, and hopeless, and scary.

Some people are scared of clowns the same way that we’re scared of spiders or enclosed spaces………..Johnny Depp is afraid of clowns….
