It’s from the novel Paul Clifford by Edward Bulwer-Lytton: “It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.”

San Jose State U. gives the Bulwer-Lytton Award each year for the worst opening line. Here’s my favorite: “James liked his women the way he liked his kiwi fruit — sweet yet tart; firm but yielding; and covered all over with short brown fuzz.”

Snoopy was FAR better. “Peanuts” was FUN to read.
