Rex thinks “Every night I chew up his right shoe and every morning I leave a present in his left shoe, but he just doesn’t seem to get the message. Bah!”

Collin is looking for perfection. He knows it elusive. Always there but just out of reach. As a student of the arts, he realizes his best stuff was by accident. In fact, art by accident has been a reoccurring theme in his life. The power of the plan has been a driving force for Collin; and this plan has been supplemented by several lists. In the beginning it was enough to read and ponder. Maybe a letter to a friend or entry in his living diary, perhaps a conversation in the park. Then his study lead to frequent bouts of self improvement programs and finally morphed into the self designed twenty three step program deemed “Determined with a Purpose”. His quick graduation was accelerated by skipping the intermediate steps, spending one weekend in the attic “halfway” house and quitting after step seventeen or eighteen. Spurred on ample ambition and the pride of accomplishment, Collin was soon focused on a higher calling. On the other hand, his musical walking meditations has upset the neighborhood. Shirley remains silently cautious. Rex has resigned himself to a dog’s life.

Now his biggest concern is keeping all four feet in step with the cadence……

Gene’s service to his local community is to keep the hedgerows and grass verges of Ballard Street free from infestations of rats, squirrels and every kind of verminous critter. He uses his own concoction of deterrent fluid, a suspension of pepper and aniseed which he carries before him in a large hemispherical bowl strapped to his waist, and which he dispenses asperges-style from sprinkling sticks fashioned out of dowel rods and old hollowed-out baseballs. Rex his old pooch’s daily promenades are ideal opportunities for this operation, much to the disgust of Rex himself who finds his refined sense of smell to be constantly sabotaged by the pungent fumes from the noxious liquid being liberally dispensed from side to side in his wake.
