As a bus rider I need a book bag to carry everything I need for a day at school or shoping. It’s pretty convenient to have that big bag across my shoulder when I need a book or my lunch or anything else, and no one laughs at me (I’m 6’4 and 300 lbs.)
We all have different circumstances and different needs. I think that whatever works in your particular circumstance is right for you. No matter whether someone else would or wouldn’t do it, go for it if it works for you and doesn’t hurt anyone else.
