Oh, my. How many of you can miss the point of strip at the same time? This isn’t about bashing one sex or the other. Look at their facial expressions in the last panel: this is a moment of epiphany for both of them, and a turning point in their marriage..Since this whole strip is set in the past, we know they “turned” in the right direction and went on with a good marriage. But not all who reach this point do: sometimes one or the other goes into an irreparable self-centered snit, and eventually the relationship dies. Tragic, because avoidable — but real life is not a sitcom, and a foolish mistake often leads to a bad end.
My husband and I are the total opposite of what is thought of as “normal” on this count. He always asks me what I’m thinking, and I’m usually thinking of how much work I have to do, what I’m going to make for dinner, etc. I don’t do a lot of navel gazing. He does.
Oh boy – you blew it twice guy, you not only took a female employee to lunch, you told your wife about it and included all the juicy deatils – don’t you know that it’s always about the wife, the traditional whiners, bitchers and moaners in any marriage, it’s always me-me-me first with the wife!!!
Elly still looks cute in this one. It must be at the point just before her nose started to grow bigger. Lynn thought it made her look funnier for the comic strip.
NO…this strip clearly displays how wives feel left out of the loop in their husband’s life if they are stay-at-home moms. It also shows how some men can become so involved in an employee’s life that they end up empathising far too much and then, entangled in a love affair with one.
I feel John went a little too far in this case. He could have invited his employee home as Ellie knows her, too, and allowed Ellie to offer the advice of another female.
Ellie needs some new clothes, including a new bathrobe, to boost her spirits. John’s got a good profession so they could afford them, I’m sure.
Here’s what Lynn Johnston had to say about this strip: "Lynn’s Notes:A doctor or dentist’s wife has to get used to their husbands being surrounded by other women. A comfortable workplace has a “family” atmosphere and appropriate personal issues are discussed openly and often. There were times- after the kids were in bed and there was time to talk- when my husband would tell me about the interpersonal things that happened at work. He told me about the ways he had intervened, helped to iron things out; been a shoulder to cry on. He was proud of his ability to defuse an argument or console someone through a personal crisis. He was proud of the way he had used psychology and encouragement and sympathy to help a staff member to get through a rough time. This strip had more than a ring of truth to it…there were alarms going off and we didn’t know it! "
One good looking male dentist at the office I go to, with 8….count them….8 cute young women waiting on him and doing all his bidding. Secretaries, assistants, hygienists. No wonder he loves his work and seems so happy there. A content dentist is all the better for me (who is in that chair), you know?
If it was the wife who went out to lunch with male ‘office mate’ and talked about the sensitive subjects that John and his office mate talked about, there would probably be a real marital upheaval. Man would say: Not acceptable, you’re my wife!. End of that sermon!

It’s only a week until Easter. Don’t we get to see last year’s beautiful eggs again? I was kind of looking forward to seeing them once more.

Now John needs to take Elly out to lunch and have a long serious talk.
