The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn’t have a collection plate during Sunday services nor a paid ministry. All it has is envelopes where you tithe your net (or gross; I forget for I’m second-genreation Latter-day Saint through Dad and multi-generation through Mom). So if I had $10, I would give $1 whih will go help th needy like Haiti, Chile and Japan for example since their quakes. If someone has $20, they’d give $2. It’s about Malachi 3:8-9.
why not just take your twenty and give it to homeless shelter, or an animal shelter?nah, do the right thing and send it to a televangelist …….they need new Rolexes and diamond rings
I do find it discouraging when someone doesn’t think twice about what they spend on absolutely nothing, but will turn in to Scrooge when asked to donate to anything.
Some of the newer congregations of the 20’s – 40’s age group have shoe boxes on prayer tables around the sanctuary/worship room & that is where & how the service is ended, in prayer with the opportunity to give, or not to give, as one is led.

No one is making you give anything, Jamal, but you’ve just shown what is more important to you :P

By contrast, peek into the casino. People just can’t toss their money away fast enough!

Our church offers the option of automatic “on-line giving.” Somehow it’s not the same!

A 1 dollar bill was talking to a twenty: “Oh, the things I have seen … the allowances, the shopping malls, the race tracks, the churches …”
and the twenty said, “What’s a church?”
