The policy in Mosaic law (Ex 22:16) was essentially: âYou sleep with her; youâre stuck with her.â The notion that you werenât husband and wife unless you went through some official ceremony didnât really begin until the Middle Ages. Heck, the words translated âhusbandâ and âwifeâ in the Bible are literally just âmanâ and âwomanâ. Sorry for all the confusion over the last few centuries.
