when i was in school, 100 was an “a”, 87 was a “b”, 74 was a “c” and 66 was a “d”. below 58 was “f”.

That might be good for an adult, but since we’re talking elementary school here, a 54 ISN’T a good grade for any subject.

What I consider unacceptable is that parents should ever be surprised at their kids’ grades. If they don’t at least have a ballpark estimate of what’s coming every week, they’re probably a) not spending enough time helping or reviewing homework, or b) in need of assistance to look for better strategies.
