Alice: Daddy, change the radio station! News is boring! Dad: News isn't boring, Alice! It's what's happening, right now, in the real world! It's important! Though sometimes it helps if it's read by a baby duck - "Hewo, flkth! Here'th tha newths! Kwwwak wak wak wakkity kwakky wak wuk wuk!" Alice: He did the news, the weather, traffic reports, a stock market update and took listeners' calls about a sewer moratorium. I almost screamed. Beni: Next time, flag down a police car.

Once I was picking up medical records and took along my three-year-old granddaughter, E. In one of the waiting rooms I heard an older man with a bad speech impediment – sounded as though he was speaking incoherently with a prosthetic voice-box. I thought this would be a teaching moment for E. Turned out he was speaking in Donald-duck-ese for her benefit.

Alice in the second panel reminds me of that old Richard Scarry children’s book where Goldbug was hiding somewhere on every page.
