Memorial day 2001 was before 9/11. This strip wasn’t post-9/11 patriotism.
This mark number 11 on today Memorial Day.
OK, now I finally have some context to this strip. It is 11 years old. Windows 98 was still running most computers, Earnhardt died at Indy, Lord of the Rings coming out, Friends, Buffy, and the X Files were still on TV.
And a tribute, then as now, is fitting.
