Apologies to Sicula for causing discussion of this strip to be hijacked. “Spirituality” in the last panel seemed like a toned down version of “empty platitudes to the deluded masses,” or at least that’s how I read it.@ColoradoRon: ultimately a church’s tax-exempt revenues are put into self-preservation/self-promotion. Grow the flock. Any religion that puts charity work ahead of self-preservation is destined to die. Period. I agree that charity is a good thing, and maybe it is the most effective way to get people to part with the money they really don’t need. I just don’t like how asking people to believe in some rather preposterous stuff has to be part of the mechanism.
All the good that is done is done by people. People give, people help, people volunteer, people empathize, people organize, it’s always people. Believing in god has never done anything positive outside of what people would normally do as good people anyway. Now, as for evils that have been done, yes, much of that has required a belief in a god.
The only people I hear proposing a flat tax are people who are already well off. They state that it will benifit the poor, but I can honestly say if they actually took taxes out of my pay my family would starve to death. And if anyone thinks that just because others no longer have to pay a high tax rate that the cost of living is going to go down, I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you. All that will happen is the fat cats will pad their wallets with the extra income and the prices will continue to soar out of site. A flat tax is simply yet another poor tax. What we need is to revamp the current system and close the loopholes that allow the rich to pay no taxes at all and start collecting the income tax that their bracket actually should be paying.

The real sham is that the stinkers don’t pay taxes. Don’t get me started…
