His more mature half, you mean. Some adults of his personality type never grow out of this stage. Some then go on to be world-famous politicians and false prophets (and even, gasp, cartoonists – B.W.. not included).
@TheSnoopBronco: You wrote, “if some people are idiots.”You don’t sound like the Snoop. You sound like Dogbert in Dilbert, or Rat in Pearls Before Swine.
“Calvin and Hobbes” is the greatest comic strip, in my lifetime. Watterson (and his wife) have a silliness, and a depth of wit, that’s unequaled. I’m sad you left, but glad that your creation is an unspoiled gem of imagination, and comic artistry.
@walruscarver2000: Yes, that came up with Lucy and Charlie Brown also, the day after Lucy was talking to Linus. Must be one of those “universal questions:”Click here: Peanuts (August 19, 1961)
Today’s strip is a great example of the imagination it takes to illustrate action in a few panels. Excellent strip. I’m more impressed with the artwork than the message.
Showing up might be a good start—but it’s not nearly enough. I always liked how Asimov’s Black Widowers started the discussion: “How do you justify your existence?”
@Vonne Anton: Yes, the best one was when Linus used his thumb and finger to shoot a hole right in the middle of a phonograph record. But I can’t post that one for you, because it’s missing from the GoComics collection. Many of the early strips are missing here. There was also a series where Linus got in trouble because he kept shooting everyone. Here’s another “Fastest Gun in the West” strip:Click here: Peanuts (November 7, 1955)

I’m over on Daily Kos watching Ayn Rand videos, and then I come over here and find this discussion. I detect a theme.

Yeah, but what have you done for the world lately, Calvin?

Pretty much most people today. Personal responsibility is old-fashioned now.

In a way, Calvin is right…racing downhill in a wagon with a friend is a great gift for life…I think I’ll go have some fun, too!

I always loved how Watterson drew trees and natural spaces . . . it reminds me of playing in the woods when I was little. :)

Calvin is no different from any 6 yr old. Teaching them that the world doesn’t revolve around them is the hard part.
