Its just a matter of finding the right material that they like to scratch on. We have a couple different types one of my cats likes the sea grass and one likes the sisal and the other really likes the emory cats and they all LOVE cardboard boxes so if we get an small empty cardboard box that we dont want we usually leave it out somewhere for them to play with and scratch on until its destroyed and then throw it out. Makes for a cheap and fun toy for them. They are 23, 17 and 16 years old.
Understand Thiser completely. Got my kitten all kinda of toys when we got him. He prefers the empty toilet roll (and will remove the tp if needed), empty boxes and tin foil balls.
We had a neighbor who demanded we keep our cat indoors. (Can’t blame her. He was a nuisance!) But the cat shreaded everything we owned, and even chewed off bites of our wooden furniture. After we moved and he could go outside again, the scratching stopped.
Our cat came up out of the woods one day and brought my mom a little bunny in her mouth. Mom, who was sweeping the porch at the time, swatted the cat with the broom; the cat, surprised and shocked, dropped the bunny. The bunny sat on the cold concrete porch for about two seconds before realizing it was free, at which point it scampered off into the woods.

I have 4 different scratching posts in the house. So what does the cat use to scratch on? The carpet in my office.
