Jason: I dunno. Giving blood just sounds so scary. So painful, so weird. Roger: It really wasn't bad at all. Plus, the place I went had a big plate of free cookies. Paige: Hey, I want tot donate blood. Roger: In a few years you can, Paige. Jason: Don't they screen for cooties, though?

Hey! I look after my own blood. No way I will ever need a transfusion. Why should I have to donate my blood just so some lazy sicko can get out of the hole he’s bled himself into? That’s just unconstitutional!

When my mom and dad were dating, he used to sell his blood to pay for their nights out. She thought it was romantic. Four kids later, apparently she was right.

I like the Icelandic and Australian systems – more or less.

They do tend to have some nice snacks for you to have afterwards, but knowing that your donation will save lives is a great feeling, too.

I would have thought it would be Peter in line for the cookies!

I didn’t have the virus that’s bad for babies, so my donations always went to babies when I wasn’t donating platelets. Now I can’t donate anymore, because I once tested False Positive for Hepatitis C. That’s an automatic deferral now. sigh.

I’m not sure about the screening – or maybe I am actually – but when I was in prep school I had what was diagnosed as “sub-clinical” hepatitis. I.e. I had SOME signs of hepatitus such as yellowish skin but not full blown symptons. I’ve never been able to donate blood (too bad since I have rarish B negative blood) because of that. Apparently can’t screen for antibodies or whatever. Now I’m probably to old.

Ugh…I know I’m a coward and I know donating is a very good thing but I don’t know if I could do it. Just this story arc is making my skin crawl.
