Big article (front page) in the New York Times yesterday about the poaching of elephants in Africa for their ivory tusks with which weapons are paid for. The military of some African country (I forget which) is shooting (they’re good marksmen) indiscriminately males, females, babies in the forehead, thousands, they’re shooting from HELICOPTERS!Sorry, but that’s what this comic reminded me of.
@Lovecraft Poaching has been an issue for many years now. Too much money is involved in the black market trade, and not just the ivory from the elephant tusks. Rhino poaching is worse. Their horn is believed to have great medical powers as well as an aphrodisiac.
Decriminalization in the legal sense didn’t keep the passenger pigeon from being hunted to extinction by people who were anything but criminals. There is already culling of elephant herds and a legal ivory trade from that. It’s the criminality of the poachers’ thinking and the lack of perception of too many others, not the presence or absence of external criminal law, that’s the problem.
You seem to have interest in elimination of needless animal suffering.Would like to send along a link to address just one of the countless animal cruelty incidents that occur worldwide, daily.Has to do with “food animals”, but extends to thoughts of animal cruelty worldwide.Am not a vegan, but this link troubles me deeply-cruelty toward those animals that give their lives that we might live. Thanks again for your great post.Needs be entered carefully, as it’s easy to slip in typing the link.Link:http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_21443820/officials-animals-video-from-hanford-slaughterhouse-didnt-reach?source=rss

Continuing this conversation, albeit on a slightly different note: how about legalizing marijuana and collecting tax, sales tax? Hm?
