Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for September 10, 2012
Transcript:
Petey: Ernesto! Are you really a crossing guard? Ernesto: Ah, Peter! No, not technically. Ernesto: I am an Assistant Junior Crossing Guard, and while I'm not yet able to "cross" people, I have been tasked with ruing dwarfs to move along. Ernesto: So move along, Peter Otterloop! Petey: Hey! Quit it! Petey: I still think you're probably imaginary. Ernesto: HA! I am beyond the realm of your puny imagination.

Petey, do not make the mistake of challenging the power of even an Assistant Junior Crossing Guard! (Take the word of a veteran olden days Crossing Guard for that.)

Ernesto is making Petey “cross” (pun intended)

I used to have an imaginary friend. Then he took an arrow to the knee, called me a jerk, and limped away.

He’s rather pushy for someone who’s imaginary, Petey.

Imagine if this entire strip was just Petey’s imagination.

Everyone needs an Ernesto on the fringe of their life…but as Warren Zevon says of the werewolves of London in the song of that title “Don’t let him in!”

I faithfully watched both those Newhart shows, wih Suzanne Pleshette and then with Mary Frann. The Newhart ending was kept totally “under wraps”. I WAS SO SHOCKED at that ending! Coolest ending I have EVER seen in television, maybe even anywhere!

Love Petey in the last panel.
