Texting can be very helpful. After Hurricane Katrina, nearly all of the relay stations for cell phones as well as the land lines were down. Since texting goes through a different network, we were able to text each other when we couldn’t connect via the phone. Even those who evacuated had to text because your phone gets routed through your home area, but texts go through regional or national switches allowing you to communicate.
