^I doubt smacking the daylights out of the kid will do anything for the situation (did it work on you?). It is the nature of kids to throw the occasional tantrum.
What always worked for us was to leave the kid screaming on the floor and go about our business as if it didn’t bother us a bit – after one or two, there weren’t many tantrums. Only caveat – in a store, I’d leave everything, take the kid outside on the sidewalk, then let him/her have at it.
When my son was four, he threw himself on the floor and pitched a tantrum in the middle of the mall. I grabbed his foot and pulled him out of the walkway and let him have his little hissy fit. The looks I got from people ranged from envy (that I had the nerve to do that) to amusement to outrage from people who couldn’t beleive I had the nerve to do that. I would just say that he’s throwing a tantrum and to move along.
When my daughter threw a tantrum I was so surprised I laughed til tears were running down my face. She was so annoyed she stopped, stomped off, and never did it again.
