When I was a kid one Christmas morning, I noticed my mother hadn’t received the gift I had wrapped and placed under the tree for her. I looked around and asked, “Is that ALL of the gifts?” My parents didn’t understand why I was asking, so they yelled at me for being greedy.
I think I found her gift under the tree and gave it to her, but what I really remember is the surprising hurt in their voices at the thought that I might have been dissatisfied with what they’d bought me for Christmas.
The one and only time I ever saw a gift before it was wrapped, was when I found an aqua leather jacket in a closet while searching for something else. I knew it was for me. I knew it. I tore through several wonderful gifts seeing only that it had to be in the last box … and my sister lifted it out – it had always been hers… never mine. But then, I’ve spent years appreciating what “is” as it comes to me – and never looking in closets before Christmas!
