Reminds me of a moment I read about from the pandemic days, when Zoom school was a thing. A kid turned around to retrieve the power cord for the laptop he was using and was immediately scolded to face the front. Mom, who nobody knew was listening in, called out “Sure, just let the computer die!” The teacher didn’t bother to find out WHY he turned around, just told him not to.
1972 or 73…my (now) favorite history teacher (Mr. Crittendon) noticed I was asleep in his American History class, probably eighth grade. He is able to quietly dismiss my class when the bell rings (which doesn’t wake me up) and quietly get his next class into room. When I finally wake up and start looking around, I’m confused because I don’t recognize my classmates. Eventually the laughter begins and I wake up enough to figure it out. He hands me a note and sends me to the office, having taught me (and two classes of students, if not more) a fantastic lesson on why sleeping in his class is dangerous!

Humans are the worst and best alarm clocks at the same time. Some are lenient, some are not.

Does anyone else see the irony in that?

Ah…public schools. Nothing teaches a child socialization skills like being told to sit down and shut up for seven hours!

I loved it when adults would be paradoxical. If it was Opposite Day.

I’ve read that the usual style of schooling—lecture—is the style that’s least effective for the majority of students.
