Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for January 31, 2010
Transcript:
Alice: There's a bird who lives in the grocery store! Petey: There are lots of them in this store. They've been here so long, they've developed regional characteristics. Those who live in the snacks aisle are fat and lethargic. The birds in the coffee aisle are never still. Those in the cereal aisle have gaudy, unnaturally hued plumage. Birds in the ice cream aisle have grown fur. And those in the dairy aisle have a distinctive call. Bird: MOoooo... Alice: Ha! And I thought nature was boring! Petey: Nature's most interesting when it's indoors.

Great strip today.

I’m sure Petey loves nature indoors … as long as it is not in his bedroom.
vldazzle almost 15 years ago
Today’s is especially good - totally stand alone and even more imagination than usual! Although to appreciate Petey’s last remark, you should know how phobic he IS.

Must be a Walmart store.

Walmart Super Store. They need zip codes to find what you want. I suppose this strip works for Creationists and Evolutionists. Very funny.

LOL—this is downright hilarious.

They must be at our grocery store. There are always birds in there, singing away in the rafters while their compatriots on the outside freeze in below zero weather.

Yes, I came across a robin once in one of our local grocery stores. They almost had to clean up aisle 6! LOL!

Fot those who want Richard Thompson to Feel the Love, try to get your hands on a copy of the “Richard’s Poor Almanac” volume, collecting some of his pieces from the Washington Post. Covering a full 125% of a calendar year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter Again), you’ll get valuable information such as the Spring Weeding Guide (“False Tea Rose - Looks & smells exactly like the lovely tea rose. But it’s a weed! Soon your yard will be covered in it! Root it out! Tear it up! Kill it!”), a consumer advisory concerning unsanctioned Girl Scout Cookies (Tinfoils, Dese ‘n’ Dose, Fugu Fugus, Peanut Butter Munchs), and the first appearance of P.J. Piehole’s Family Restaurant (closed by the Health Dept. because the meat and vegetable courses on the Children’s Menu were allowed to touch each other)!
It seems to be out of print, but I got a copy from the Amazon.com Marketplace. Unfortunately, this probably means Thompson won’t see a dime off the transaction (I’ll send you a check, RT). But he’ll KNOW that you’re reading it. Somehow, he’ll just know…

Or in Home Depot.

I always look forward to this strip and Stone Soup on Sundays in particular–color, story, humor—pathos when called for too. Petey’s a rare bird today himself, the olderbrothergotasenseofhumor bird.

My thanks to you all for the nice comments! I kinda like this one myself, and I’m glad you do too. Frtizoid, thank you for the Poor Almanac plug. I’ve got 527 copies stashed in the spare-bedroom/storage-annex/walk-in-closet. Anybody wants one, lemme know….

If there’s a way to get one signed, I’d be happy to pay for another…
Do you ever do personal appearances? Book tours? Vacations out West? Alcatraz has a wonderful tour…
Or I can come to Virginia to pick it up… Can I crash at your house?
(Oh, and while you’re signing the book, could you throw in an original sketch? And color it?)

Richard: How much and where do we send it? As a fellow Virginian I have to ask, did you get the snow?

I think i have seen some of those birds at the local Walmart come to think of it! I love the cereal aisle bird the best though.
andymeijers almost 15 years ago
Never seen one at a grocery store- health department would probably be unhappy. But the local Lowes has a whole colony going, up in the rafters.

I think I loaned out my PRA out and I didnt get it back, so save me one please!
I think a website to sell your stuff is a great idea!
uh-ohkid almost 15 years ago
Yeah yeah, kudos to RT - back to the strip! ;-)
I think the sparrows at my Home Depot (might be RT’s too) have become adept at using hand tools.
Way to go Richard - we need to ‘do lunch”…

I always save this comic for last–it’s the best!

About 6-7 inches here in Norfolk as well. Since we have nothing to speak of in the way of snow removal equipment, it will be here for a while (or at least until it rains).

my science teacher will love this!
