Petey: Can I go inside? The bugs are bothering me. Mom: Try to ignore them, Petey. Petey: That won't work - bugs can sense rejection. Also disgust, contempt, unease, feigned indifference and false bravado. And they can sense embarrassment, awkwardness and hesitancy. GAH! See? It's following me! If I stand just inside the screen door, it can't get me. No matter how much I register my disgust! NYAH NYAH!Alice: I got some lawn trimmings in my hot dog. Mom: Spit it out. Has the first cookout of the year ever been so magical? Petey: NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH. Dad: Careful. Bugs can sense sarcasm.
Some friends of my sister used to hold an annual event, which included an outdoor welcoming meal. The traditional dish was Junebug Chili, which was homemade chili with peanuts in it. The story (which was presented to me as true, although I don’t know if I believe it) was that, one year, a number of junebugs got into the chili pot, and since they (the hosts) couldn’t be sure if they fished ’em all out, they stirred a bag of peanuts into it as camouflage. If you bit into something crunchy, you could at least figure that it was probably a peanut…
