Gee, I hadn’t seen anybody use “smek” since Milt Gosses’ “Nize Baby” some 60 years ago. It’s a good desultory sound perfect for the administration of a light bitch-slap with the back of your hand across a face.
The-jack-in-the-box we had as kids gave me the creeps, too. “Jack,” the clown, was a classic scary clown in appearance and demeanor. And then there was the ambiguity of when the top would pop open even when you could see the little latch moving. But it was for a good purpose, I guess. It was preparing us for the nuclear annihilation we expected at any minute during the 50s.

Perhaps the impetus for the classic Moby Dick.

That jack-in-the-box is either sick or evil, or (more likely) both….

This IS the stuff of nightmares. Closely related to clowns.

Good hygiene will prevent that!

This is one of my top 10 Cul de Sac strips. That clown inching out of the that box—genius!

That toy IS creepy! I don’t remember any Jack-in-box with that much spring (or fabric length).
