Mom: C'mon, Petey! You can do it! Petey: Mom, I don't know- Mom: Go, Petey, go! Petey: No wait, I caaaaaa. Mom: Omigosh- Petey? Mom: Petey? Can you stand up? Petey: I-I don't know- Petey: Yeah, I guess so. Mom: Yay! Who's mom's big boy? Let's do it again! Petey: Are you crazy? Are you trying to kill me? Beni: Is your brother in another awkward stage? Alice: I call it "keeping mom's expectations low" and I'm all for it.
Madeline is trying to experience the thrill of sledding vicariously through Petey. Petey doesn’t like thrills; he prefers tranquillity. Alice recognizes Petey’s exasperation and endorses his action, if perhaps for her own reasons. I’m with Petey all the way on this; I think I was kinda like him in some respects as a kid….
