Mom: After preschool we're going to Grandma's to help her open some jars. Alice: I'll wait in the car. Mom: No you won't. Are you being scared of Big Shirley? Alice: Who? No! Big Squirrelly? I don't- is that a name? Mom: I'll protect you.
I always under the impression that Big Shirley is just a big black teddy bear who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and the only thing to be scared of about her was her large size to those easily intimidated by such things (aka petite little Alice). But Richard never really says one way or another on the matter. As far as he was concerned, Big Shirley is just big and Alice is afraid her.
