Alice: I don't see what's wrong with being grabby. Mom: Do you like it when someone grabs your things? Mom: Like this- POLYFILL IS MINE! Dill: What was that sound? Beni: An inhuman cry of anger, betrayal, horror, and thwarted grabbiness.
Beni is so Shakespearean! The description of the terrible off-stage action is all the more impactful because it forces us to imagine the horror—and our imagination is always more horrifying than anything that could be shown onstage (unless perhaps Titus Andronicus).Well played, Madeline!
I am so impressed by Beni’s abilities. He clearly has a great capacity for empathy, and a highly sensitive, possibly musical, ear. Also glad to see Dill hasn’t been traumatized to any lasting extent.

it pales, at the mere thought.

Alas, kids at that age really can’t be reasoned with. You just have to lay down the law.
You can’t start reasoning with them until they’re older— just about the time they start talking back, and you WANT to lay down the law. IME.

Beni is smart. It surprized me to see Dill wearing a helmut on a kiddy-car.

Younger children have the innocence to learn when taught. It’s when they become teenagers that it all blows up in their parent’s faces.
