From usmm.org;“[Mariners] have written one of its most brilliant chapters. They have delivered the goods when and where needed in every theater of operations and across every ocean in the biggest, the most difficult and dangerous job ever undertaken. As time goes on, there will be greater public understanding of our merchant’s fleet record during this war [World War II].”
Got a friend who’s a merchant marine. He likes it except for the months-in-a-row away from his family. And the pirates. They’ve fought off pirates before (though they’re not supposed to).
My uncle was in it and loved it… WWII and beyond. Unfortunately, the family thought he had died in the 40’s. He and my mom reconnected, but he passed before I could meet him. He probably had stories…….
Sounds interesting (and good for a kid who has no career and is resistant to study). I know that Cuban cigars DO make their way here, but not legal (many celebs find them). There is a whole Cuban community in FL, so good hand rolled ones of similar quality must be available there. I don’t smoke, and HATE cigars in particular-so don’t ask me!

P3 – and dad’s right. You can’t and I think you can still get arrested for bringing them into the country.

The Merchant Marines actually have their own academy, in King’s Point, NY. I did some work on their network once.
