When our three daughters were still all at home – 35 years ago, or so – cell phones didn’t exist. Even now, Local Daughter doesn’t keep hers out. However, we did allow them to read at the table, if only to keep them quiet so Hubby and I could talk.
Thank goodness we didn’t have to deal with phones, The tv was upstairs, so dinner was dinner, We talked, ate and I agree with Ratbrat it was bonding time.

When our sons were children, 25+ years ago, mom was the enforcer and I was the playmate. So the comic is familiar.

We’ve always had a TV on in the background but nobody watched it. The conversation was the important thing and all contributed to it.
