Two or three years ago a rather Penny-like friend (but only in her shopping habits… she’s very nice and loves to share… kinda unfortunately) invited me to Thanksgiving dinner.
Luckily, I said I was sorry but I always go to the same place… .
I say “Luckily” cos she added, by way of enticement,that they were trying to use up all the frozen turkeys in the freezer from two years before…So they were going to roast two of them, and give everybody lots of leftovers.
AND there was frozen pie in there too…. what kind did I like?
Not only was I glad I missed it, I’ve declined almost all dinner invitations from her ever since.
I only go when it’s very, very clear that they just got the food.
Stock up after Christmas or Thanksgiving you have to look at the year to.
I guess one can taste the freshness of the one marked one day later. I hate to see the display after she dug down to find the fresher one.
I bet she is one of those who leaves the meat on the shelf by the potato chips because she wants the out dated chips and has to give something up. I hate it when people do that…
Hey Susan, your friend must have one massive size freezer! These people take the cake, and the pie too! After my father-in-law had to move out of his condo, we had to get the stuff out that was left, including the food. We found can goods that had expired six years ago! I’m afraid that the Pennys will likely be the same way when they have to move. lol
I sometimes have sugar that I’ve had too long (especially dark or light brown) and I have some mini marshmallows that I probably bought when grandkids were visiting. Most foods get recycled before buying more though. (I just don’t use that sweet stuff for myself).
I keep all the kinds of flour nuts and grains in countertop canisters, filled from bulk of 5# bags in the big pantry and all the dry beans are in there almond flour is sealed in bags inside the big box because I bought 25# while doing gluten free I’ll still use it up eventually but that stuff is horribly expensive bought by 1# bags. The almond cracker recipe is really yummy, though (and I can always make Amaretti) so I WILL use it up while still fresh.
Thawed?!?! Capndunzzl… that would suggest that Joy and crew put in a bit more effort than I suggest they would like. I suspect the pie was an on-the-shelf, prebaked, room temperature, ready-to-eat pie. Joys effort was in opening the box.
Have to love the plaque proudly proclaiming “I love to Cook” while Joy serves a frozen pie with Cool-Whip. I DO check even a slight difference in freshness date when buying eggs and dairy (even the almond milk I currently drink)
and back when I was working and sometimes had some precooked egg rolls or such from the deli to save time, there was sometimes one with a slightly different date (if I could not tell through the saran wrap).
Once when I was young (and for some reason not cooking at my parents) either college or marriage my mother “did” Thanksgiving. She figured the only important part was the family together which in theory is right, but I will never forget that huge number of Banquet frozen turkey dinners (and how she managed to scorch the peas). I have just one cousin older and he said “never mind, Aunt Dottie, I LIKE crunchy peas!”
After I was married (especially after our 3rd son, when we finally bought a house) I officially took over the family dinners and I remember many of my menus. The main was generally always Turkey or Ham (though I did Cornish hens once to the protest of my kids) but my clam chowder was a big family favorite and the tiny lobster tails were affordable even for a crowd for 2nd course (twice-baked with peppers and onion and pharm).
