The idea of any other kind of party than a block party is foreign to them.Their idea of a party is sitting on your driveway in lawn chairs along with everyone else and bbq-ing in the street. Not very likely Beverly Hills would allow that.!

Sigh. Even if the Pennys live in them, neighborhoods like those pictured by 2old are the best. Far better than “Mrs. Smith died last night. Who? Your next-door neighbor for the past 14 years.”

Burl and Joy live in an aging housing tract in Crustwood Heights….. low, split-level 1960’s “ranch” homes…far less upscale than the elegant, multi-story “Old Crustwood” neighborhood in 2Old’s 1st photo…

In fact, 2Old… are you sure those folks in your second photo aren’t trying to keep the Pennys away?

And I agree that their idea of a party is sitting in the street….but I don’t think they’re barbecuing…unless maybe they put a package of dollar store hot dogs on the grill, just in case.I’d bet the idea is to wander around, slowly, in between beers, and casually eat some of everybody else’s ribs, steak, and chicken.

“Hey, Phil, stop by our place and have a hot dog… oh… a rib? Sure! Thanks.”

Later they complain to each other about whose chicken was too dry or whose steaks were really “chintzy.”

Nobody’s sauce was as good as Joy’s recipe, either:

“One bottle Kraft’s barbecue sauce. One small bottle ketchup.4 packets Taco Bell mild salsa… or however many you brought home last week.

    Mix together."

It’s her mother’s cherished secret recipe….Don’t forget to open the salsa packets and empty them into the sauce.Do NOT throw them in whole. What a mess that was.

My oldest friend and I always say when we get to the point we can’t remember each other – we will be new friends.

    snerk

Verb or Noun: Small sound that is emitted through the nose and mouth, usually a compressed laugh or snort. Often accompanied with a small grin, smirk, or sneer. Usually a tone of either derision, (as when someone says something you find stupid) or innocent humor. (When someone tells you a funny joke and you are busy doing something else, so a full-fledged laugh is difficult.)Nice to use behind other’s backs, as when they do something inanely stupid and you can’t help but laugh about it, but don’t want to fall over laughing.

Not meanin’ to talk for 2old, but I think a “snerk” is not unlike a “snark”, a laugh done drawing in air so it (quite deliberately!) sounds a bit like a pig grunting. You know: Snark!! SNARK!! Once a poster in another comic strip’s column asked me "what was up with me and “Haw! HAW!!” I politely explained….these things represent comic-strip type laughter. Since you can’t “hear” the laugh’s sound, a suitable word or words must be used……..or something like that!! Chortle! CHORTLE!!
