I remember reading it in 1959 and seeing it on stage in NYC in 1961. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to “get” it until I finally figured out that not having anything to “get” was the point. I have experienced the same thing in the Rothko Chapel here in Houston. I spent about an hour there sitting quietly until my mind finally gave up the hubbub of life and I was able to listen to…God? Who knows? Or to think about my life and how I want to lead it, not my toys or conquests. It was very hard and I would have much preferred to be thinking about the lovely Clare M. or a fast car.
