This reminds me of one time when I was working as a stock clerk in the automotive section of a department store. I was helping a customer figure out what battery he needed for his car and the guy was commenting on how it was the third battery he’d bought that week because he kept getting bad batteries. Then he described how the battery would start his car and let it run for a while and then everything would start dying out as he kept driving. From personal experience I knew that the problem wasn’t the guys batteries, the problem was the guys alternator. I explained to him that the car didn’t run off the battery, it ran off the alternator which supplied power to the car and recharged the battery at the same time and the only time the car used the battery power was to start or if there was a problem with the alternator (I had 2 alternators go bad on me so I recognized the symtoms when the guy told me the problem). When I was done the guy looked at me like I was some kind of idiot and then said, “what do you know about cars? All you do is stock shelves.” then he grabbed his new battery and walked off to the register. I always wondered how many batteries he went through before he bothered to have his alternator checked.
