Mark: And now it's time for "Tanning Tidbits" gossip from the beach set... who was that bronzed blonde seen soaking up the azuma rays with George Hamilton the other day? Back with us today is a "Profiles On Parade" perennial, Mr. Zonker Harris, fresh from his recent triumphs on the tanning circuit. Zonker, you've just returned from a tanning event in the Hamptons. Other top events this year will be in Kallua, Gstaad and Malibu. I hate to lead with a zinger, but isn't competitive tanning the sport of kings? Zonker: I'm glad you asked me that question, Mark. It gives me a chance to clear up some misconceptions about the costs of competitive tanning. Case in point. In 1975, the front-runner at the Beverly Hills bake-off was Robert Evans, the producer. He'd poured nearly $40,000 into training at the best tanning clinics in the world. The tournament began and Evans was promptly creamed by a rookie out of Palisades Park who had built his entire tan from scratch with a $60 jerry-rigged microwave oven! Mark: Good Lord. How humiliating! Zonker: Tell me about it. The kid had been training in Reynold's wrap.
