Dean: To think this was a once proud institution... I wonder what we were once proud of. What am I looking at? Man: A report on what college students are learning today. It's based on testing that measures critical thinking, complex reasoning and writing skills. Almost half the kids tested made no gains after two years of college it turns out they spend three times as many hours socializing as studying! Dean: Shocking. C'mon, Dean, that's why they come! And as long as we give them good grades and a degree, their parents are happy too! Who cares if they can't reason? Man: Uh... employers? Dean: Any special reason you're late, son? Student: Yes, sir. I got trapped in a paper bag.
Dough, could you provide some evidence for your generalizations?I would love colleges to teach reason, but I don’t see it valued too highly in American society. From 2001 to 2009, we had a president (unelected, admittedly) who could neither reason nor think. Now that we have a president who can reason, our media (right-leaning and never fond of reason; reason doesn’t make the good video that quips & emotion do) help create a resurgent opposition founded on bigotry & emotional demagoguery.
