Earl: Pop, there's only one argument against Texas secession-- Austin! You'd hate to lose the Austin of live music, high tech, UT Austin, SXSW, SoCo and general weirdness. But there's also the Austin of Rick Perry and the Texas state legislature. Duke: Sounds like Cold War Berlin. Earl: Right. Or Jerusalem without check-points.

Iâd like to see those as town mottoes on billboards at the city limits. Itâd do wonders for civic pride.

Apart from the Western Wall I donât think there arenât actually many checkpoints in Jerusalem; there is airport-style security into buildings but not checkpoints. Into, and within, the Palestinian occupied territories, however is another matter. If you ever get the chance to go on the tour of Bethlehem and Ramallah that puts you on the bus to come back through the Qalandia gate, itâs a sobering experience to realise that the people you are with have to put up with this 5 days a week.

Puts me in mind of Huntsville, vs. the rest of Alabama (say, two miles outside the city limits or more)âŠ

Thereâs an actual bus, that drove at least 1,200 miles, here in the Twin Cities this week, promoting the music of Austin. Had I not seen the TV report, I wouldnât have believed it. Not sure what happened to ACL (mainly encores it seems); is Austin getting that desperate for tourists?

If it was Sharia law, what would the Cowboy cheerleaders look like in burkas? Muslims stay home-Africa.

gee, would you rather live the the Liberal and Bankrupt Detroit, Chicago, and California, where there is no moral standards or in the low tax, you can make your own fortune and it wont have to be taxed away Texas?Envy of the Lone Star State and the rest of Flyover states from the liberal coasts is great

Enough of the politics â lets talk about something important. Did anyone notice the continuity error in this weeks strip?Hint â Duke Tie.

I seem to recall this Trff Overthrow/Duke/Texas Secession storyline about this time LAST year.

Austin has well over 600,000 people. It is hardly a ânice little cityâ. Except for all the liberals, itâs a great place.

Ah, to openly be a bigot and write cartoonsâŠ..

Under the leadership of âclownâ Rick Perry, Texas has one of the best economies in the US. Meanwhile, the leadership of your hero Obama is destroying the economy of the US as a whole. The âclownâ is clearly doing a lot better than your hero.

Since when is it bigotry to dislike a political party? What if itâs âfunnyâ bigotry? Wouldnât that make it just as okay as âfunnyâ racism?

So you think Texas should adopt the liberal big-government plan and have the wonderful infrastructure of Detroit? When liberal Democrats took over Detroit, it had the highest living standards in the US. They spent like there was no tomorrow, and there doesnât appear to be much of a tomorrow for them. Texas lives on a budget, and our infrastructure is just fine, thank you.

Thatâs an interesting claim. Iâve been a conservative for decades, and Iâve never seen even one of them who wants to fundamentally change the country. Do you have a wild imagination, or are you just delusional?

I love these unrelated comments instigated by cartoon where commenters take opinionated pot-shots at each other.

âif more people would figure out that just 105,000 doesnât amount to the many millions who did not sign the petition nor wanted to.â-Yep, a vote not for can well be considered a vote against.Subtract the large number from elsewhere and the petition has little, okey NO, real meaning.

âFollowing Leviticus law in the Bible means no more bikinis eitherâ-I forget, where does Levitical Law forbid bikinis?Even if so, this is obviously forbidden by our Constitutional prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment such as it would inflict on us aesthetically minded males.

" âBe careful or we will cut Alaska in half and make Texas the third biggest state. For some reason many Texans never found it funnyâŠ..â-I hadnât heard that one, but have to admit it IS funny. I remember the standard response to Alaska being bigger was, âOnly until it melts.â(talk about PROPHETIC!!)-(By the way, Iâm not from Texas but havenât personally met any Texans I disliked. Decent enough folks for the most part.)

When you are heading out of Austin, there are signs saying âWelcome to Texasâ. Except for the Capitol building, it is an oasis of sanity.
SClark55 over 11 years ago
If itâs not clear enough already from other comments, Trudeau probably doesnât like Austin because of music, hi-tech, etc.; he likes it cuz itâs by far the most liberal city in the state. Donât let him get you to thinking this is just over niceties.
kaffekup over 11 years ago
And thatâs just a great reason by itself.
