Marcia: Mike: You have a moment? Mike: Sure, Marcia, what's up? Marcia: I just wanted to let you know that since I'm having a formal singularity ceremony, and it's, you know, a pretty important occasion, that I've... I've... Oh, god, this is so embarrassing to have to tell you myself... Mike: C'mon, now, spit it out. Marcia: I've registered a china pattern at Bloomingdales. Mike: 'Nuff said, I'll spread the word.

I don’t think my friend had a china pattern picked out for her celebration divorce party. She missed that. I’ll tell her for her next one….

Celebrations are not necessarily about who needs stuff. And sometimes people make assumptions that are not true, as in those 30 year olds getting married may actually need some stuff for the kitchen. People don’t always know.

not vexman, someone might as well use his account to comment. Not everyone who has a mate wants one, and some single people do, ditto with kids.As far as who can afford them, only the wealthy or comfortable would have them, not sure if that is a good world solution either. We are not as clever as we think and our designs for a perfect world differ, as do all our circumstances which may be the best “design” of all after all.

That’s right. My wife and I got maried to scam gifts. Those 8 electric can openers we got were worth a fortune.

Marcia has a good idea here. I’ve known, and known of. people who got married for all sorts of terrible reasons, including gifts and to win a bet. Unsurprisingly, none lasted.

To all those who think “only those who can provide” should have children — Provide what, and up to whose standard? Provide all that money can buy, or provide a sense of self worth, ethical responsibility, and a whole catalog if those intangibles that make up the many varieties of responsible, caring citizens of the world? And as to baby showers — among the common folk, those are the local community’s way of offering their support to the child and the family. “Our village — our kid!”
