I didn’t realize Alice called Mark “Marv”. She’s gettin’ a bit senile.

I believe the intent of this cartoon, even back in the 80’s is still sorrowfully true today. The homeless. When it turns as cold as it does where do they go? As a whole we turn our backs on them. “Not my problem”. Until everyone is taken care of it’s all our problem. Well, unless you’re a religious person. I’ve seen more hypocrisy in that group than any. And it can happen to anyone at anytime in their life. I was chugging away at a career I adored. An Occupational Therapist Assistant. Over 13 years. Not only a job I loved but I made darn good money. I hid a problem I knew I had. Something wrong with me but I wanted to keep going. Then on July 13th 2007 it all changed. Two spinal surgeries by a hack neurosurgeon and my career was over for good. And my “Government Entitlements”? I want to slap people. I paid into social security when I got my first job at 16. Worked my whole life. College degree. Now I exist on disability. And food stamps. “All you lazy people living off the government wanting all the free handouts are what’s wrong with this country!”. I was told I qualified for $16 a month in food stamps. I told them to keep it. Our poor government obviously needed it more than I did. I’m a lucky one though. I already owned a home and through very frugal living I’ve kept it. I’m not on the street. And when I see a homeless person I don’t care if it’s my last dollar. I give it to them. Peace out from one who is THIS close to being there.
