I have been too poor (student loans) to afford salt shakers and a lot of other middle-class accoutrements my family had growing up. Now I’m too old to care, and it strikes me as an ostentation. Not as bad as the “salt pig” some people have in their kitchens. Anywho, they should buy Norm screw-top shakers for Christmas.
The first s&p shakers I got when we got married (decades ago) had this problem. I had to wedge them in my hand to keep the salt from running out. Since then I have only bought the type that the top unscrews and one pours the salt/pepper in and then screws the top on.
No rice. That would attract icky things – bugs, mice, etc.

Ok, that wasn’t even funny.

The hardest part is doing that ‘plip’ thing in panel 2.

Here in the Deep South you need to put rice in the salt shaker to keep the salt from clumping up. So, make sure you put that on the diagram you draw.

If you shove the salt crystals in the tiny holes on top, this won’t happen.

Well, I read it and went, “Haha- er, wait, how WOULD you get the salt in there?” We’ve only ever had diner-style screw-top S&P shakers.
