Want to bet he included 1/2 the cost of the bottle of wine?

If they had stated from the outset that this restaurant would be too expensive for them, this would not happen. But seems like for many of us admitting we can’t afford something amounts to “loss of face”. Dumb, eh?

He’s probably expecting them to pay for 2/3 of the dinner plus tip.

When we invite people to dinner out, we pick up the tab and I let them know that up front.

Yeah, we all saw that coming.

My advice? Excuse yourselves saying you’re going to go discuss how to pay in private for a second, and then, when your “host” isn’t looking, quickly bail and thereby sticking him with the bill.

If he’s really so rich, then he shouldn’t have so much trouble paying for it. And if he isn’t actually that rich…well, that sounds like a personal problem to me.

One look at the menu and I’d have stuck to a glass of water, period. That way the whole bill would be the jerk’s.

If you invite someone to dinner and pick the restaurant, you should pick up the check.

Len should say “thanks for the great dinner and conversation Harley.” And walk out

Hmm… most of the really rich people I know would have found some way to write this off as a business expense. Like, “Len, I hear you’re co-owner of a delivery company. What kind of rates do you charge? Uh huh. Have you considered contracting to my company? Mmmhmm. OK, we discussed business: now it’s a write-off.”

Literally sat in on a conversation that went like that once.

I was always taught if you invited a friend out, YOU paid, because that person was a guest.

he should have suggested another place that they could afford when his friend first contacted him. that is why his friend is splitting the bill instead of treaty them to a night out; he just assumed they could afford it.
